Choosing the Right Suit for an Interview

We have had a lot of customers and referrals ask us our proposal for the best suit for an interview. Here at Suits.com.ng, our suggestions have always been the same. An interview is a business or serious meeting, hence should be handled as such.

A business suit should be your choice of dress irrespective of the field or organization that invited you. Yes, a 3-piece suit, a conservative colored blazer, or a double-breasted suit could be worn as an interview suit, but only in organizations with non-conservative dress culture. Even in such situations, it becomes more difficult to select the right accessories to go with the suit.

The Three Most Important Things to Consider

1. Design of Suit

Suit designs are very important when going for an interview. The best design of a business suit is a two-button suit (one-button suits could also be used, but two-button is better), medium-sized notched lapel, single-breasted design with a straight cut pant trouser.

2. Suit Color

The right color of suit will do the magic. Avoid black suits—they are too common. The best colors are Navy Blue and Charcoal Grey. If you are very dark in complexion, consider a medium grey color. Solid colors are safer; if you must wear stripes, choose pinstripes.

3. Suit Accessories

Shirt: Plain white or sky blue shirt. Hidden white and blue stripes are acceptable with a navy suit.

Tie: Long tie preferred over a bow tie. Plain colors or subtle patterns like tiny stripes, polka dots, or paisley.

Shoes: Dark brown lace-up shoes are the best match.

An interview is a business meeting. Your first impression matters, and over 85% of your body is covered by your clothing. Appearance alone can set you apart when candidates are equally qualified.

We recommend a Navy Blue two-piece, two-button business suit with double vents at the back, a plain white shirt, a striped or polka-dot long tie, and a dark brown shoe. Remember, suit fitting is very important.
